Acidity & GERD – Ayurvedic Solutions at Ayulife, Gurgaon

Acidity—often presenting as burning sensations, acid-reflux, or discomfort after meals—and GERD (acid reflux from stomach into the esophagus) affect many individuals, particularly in a high-stress urban setting. At Ayulife, our approach is to offer sustainable relief and restore digestive health.

Understanding Acidity & GERD in Ayurveda

From an Ayurvedic viewpoint, the digestive fire or Jātharagni plays a central role in metabolism, digestion, assimilation and elimination. When this fire becomes disturbed—especially by an excess of the Pitta dosha—acid production may increase, resulting in what Ayurveda describes as Amla Pitta.

In the case of GERD, the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) fails to properly prevent gastric contents from flowing back into the oesophagus—hence the term “gastro-esophageal reflux”.

Key factors include:

  • Elevated stomach acid / excessive Pitta → burning sensation, sour belching.
  • Weakened or inflamed LES + delayed gastric emptying → reflux symptoms.
  • Disturbed Jātharagni (either too strong—Tīkṣṇa Agni—or erratic) leading to impaired digestion.

Why Acidity & GERD Are So Common in Urban Life

Living in a fast-paced city like Gurgaon can foster conditions that precipitate acidity/GERD:

  • Irregular meal times, skipping meals or eating late at night
  • Frequent intake of fried, spicy or heavy foods
  • High stress, long working hours, inadequate sleep
  • Excess consumption of caffeine, carbonated drinks, alcoholic beverages
  • Air-conditioned indoor environments, sedentary behavior

These habits undermine the digestive fire and create a favorable environment for reflux and acid imbalance.

Treatment of Stomach Problems at Ayulife :

Ayurveda identifies four states of Agni:

Type of Agni Dominant Dosha Characteristics
Manda Agni Kapha Slow digestion, heaviness, lethargy
Vishama Agni Vata Gas, irregular appetite, alternating constipation
Tikshna Agni Pitta Excess hunger, acidity
Sama Agni Balanced Ideal digestion and metabolism

Acidity usually results from Teekshna Agni that is result of an excessively strong or overactive digestive fire. When Agni becomes too sharp, it digests food very quickly but also produces excess heat and acid in the stomach. This leads to:

  • Burning sensation in the chest or stomach
  • Increased acidity and sour belching
  • Feeling hungry very frequently
  • Irritability and heat in the body
  • Acid reflux or Amla Pitta symptoms

People with Teekshna Agni benefit from cooling, soothing foods and avoiding spicy, oily, and acidic items to keep digestion balanced.
