Acidity or Gastroesophageal reflux disease( GERD ) , is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Its called Amla Pitt in Ayurveda.

  1. Gastroesophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus.
  2. Reflux means to flow back or return.

Excessive accumulation of acid in the stomach causes the acidity and sometimes this acid flows back to the food pipe and gives the reflux of the acid and food in the mouth. This is usually termed as GERD or Acid Reflux.

This causes other symptoms also like

  1. Burning in the Chest
  2. Skin Disorders like Itching on the skin
  3. Pimples
  4. Migraine.
Teeksha Agni in Ayurveda -- Cause for Acidity

As per Ayurveda, our Metabolism is controlled by Jathragni or called digestive fire. This Jathragni lies in the stomach and is responsible for the digestion and assimilation of food. When this is in balance stage called Samagni the metabolism is healthy. 

Due to imbalance in Tridoshas the jathragni gets imbalanced.  When Pitta dosha dominates its called Teeksha Agni which increase the digestion power and increases the production of acid in our body.

Ayurveda Treatment to Acidity, GERD, Acid Reflux

As per Ayurveda, Acid Reflux is caused when the Pitta becomes un-balanced. Pitta is located in the stomach and is symbolized as a sharp, intense, hot and acidic energy. 

When Pitta dosha dominates its called Teeksha Agni which increase the digestion power and increases the production of acid in our body.

In Ayurveda we treat this Teeksagni and  bring it to normal level called Samagni and this is achieved by Ayurveda medicines or Panchkarma procedures. 

Following methods may be adapted for easing the GERD or Acidity problems :

  1. Have half glass of cold milk without sugar to ease the acidity.
  2. Take some Ghee with hot milk in the food as Ghee acts as Laxative.
  3. Avoid Tea and Coffee.
  4. Avoid Noodles made in vinegar, citrus juices, tomatoes, chilies, onions, garlic, alcohol and fried food
  5. Stress and some pain killers also increase the acidity. 
  6. Limit uncooked salads, fatty or fried foods, mustard, vinegar, tomato sauce, 
  7. Do not consume alcohol, citrus products, garlic, onion, carbonated drinks and caffeine.
