What is RaktaMokshan ?
Leech therapy (Medicated Leech Therapy) is used in Panchakarma for purification of blood so sometimes called a blood purification therapy. These are special medical leeches which suck impure blood from the skin and pure blood remains.
Disintegrated red blood cells produces Pitta in the liver. Pitta & Blood have a close relationship. An increase in Pitta Dosha cause toxicity into blood and thus Leech therapy sucks toxins from blood. This cures Pitta Dosh related disorders.
Procedures of Raktamokoshan
- Leeches are small worms and have have tiny rows of teeth.
- The leeches are applied on the affected area of patient and pierce their teeth on person’s skin.
- The Enzymes in saliva of leech enter the blood of patient which acts as an anti-coagulant.
- This leech enzyme stays in the blood and do vasodilation and increases the blood supply to the surrounding tissue.
- This prevent necrosis and expedites the healing The leeches are then allowed to extract blood, for 20 to 45 minutes at a time.
- Bloodletting also stimulates the spleen to produce anti-toxic substances that help to stimulate the immune system. Toxins are neutralized, enabling radical cures in many blood-borne disorders.
- Pitta is produced from the disintegrated red blood cells in the liver. So Pitta & Blood have a close relationship.
- An increase in pitta may go into the blood causing toxicity, and thus pitta related disorders cured through Leech therapy
