What are Tridoshas?

As mentioned in the Ayurveda Test books — Ashtang Haridya, Tridosha is defined as

वायु: पतं कफचेत यो दोषा: समासत: ॥ वकृताऽवकृता देहं नित ते वतयित च ।

vāyu: pittaṃ kaphaśceti trayo doṣā: samāsata: || vikṛtā’vikṛtā dehaṃ ghnanti te varttayanti ca |

Vayu/ Vata, Pitta and kapha are the three Doshas of the body.

Types of Prakruti – Body Types

शु ातवथै: जमादौ वषेणैव वषकृमे: ॥ तैच त: कृतयो हनमयोतमा: पथकृ ् । समधात: समतास ु ु ेठा नया वदोषजा ॥

śukrārtavasthai: janmādau viṣeṇaiva viṣakṛme: || taiśca tisra: prakṛtayo hīnamadhyottamā: pṛthak | samadhātu: samastāsu śreṣṭhā nindyā dvidoṣajā ||

Like the poison is inherent to poisonous insects, similarly, the Prakruti (body type) is inherent to humans. The body type is decided during conception, based on qualities of sperm and ovum.

संसगः सिनपातच तवयकोपतः

The increase, decrease of individual Doshas, or imbalance of couple of these Doshas is called as Samsarga. And imbalance of all the three Doshas together is called as Sannipata.

Characteristics of Kapha Dosha

िनध: शीतो गमद: लणो म ु न: िथर: कफ: ॥

ृ snigdha: śīto gururmanda: ślakṣṇo mṛtsna: sthira: kapha: ||

These are the characteristics of Kapha Doshas

    • Oily Skin.  
    • Unctuous,
    • Coldness in body. 
    • Body Weight is usually higher, Tendency to Obesity.
    • Lethargic, Not quite Active. 
    • Body Smoothness.
    • Lack of mobility in person.

    Functions of Kapha Dosha

    लेमा िथरविनधवसिधबधमादभः

    • Kapha confers stability, lubrication, compactness (firmness) of the joints,
    • Easily Convincing Personality. 

    Effects of increased Kapha Dosha on Body

    लेमा अिनसदनसेकालयगौरवम ् वैयशैयशलथागवं वासकासातनताः

    Kapha, when increases, it causes

    • Weak Digestion
    • Excess salivation.
    • Lethargy in Body, laziness
    • Feeling of heaviness,
    • Usually Fair Skin
    • Coldness in Body.
    • Looseness of the body parts,
    • Dysponea, asthma, COPD
    • Prone ot Cough, cold
    • Excess of sleep

    Effects of Decreased Kapha Dosha in Body

    कफे मः लेमाशयानां शू यवं वः शलथसिधता

    • Emptiness of the organs of Kapha,
    • Tremors of the heart (palpitation) 
    • Looseness of the joints.
    • Delusion, Dizziness,
